Application of the redox concept in waste treatment

One application of the concepts of redox reactions in daily life is in the field of waste treatment. The basic principle used is the oxidation of organic and inorganicmaterials, making it easier to be further processed.Waste is one of the environmental pollutants .We have to think how to overcome them.To maintain and to prevent environmental contamination due to the accumulation of waste is increasing, many efforts have been carried out to obtain a précis and and efficient technique according to the local conditions.

Various types of liquid waste treatment by involving microorganisms has been done in Indonesia, namely sedimentation, oxidation ponds, trickling filters, activated sludge (activated sludge), and septic tanks. On this description we will learn only one technique the technique of activated sludge (activated sludge).
Activated sludge process (activated sludge) is a system that is widely used for aerobic liquid waste treatment. Activated sludge is the most effective method to remove us spended and dissolved materials from the liquid waste.Once the liquid waste settling insedimentation  tanks, sewage flowed into the aeration tank  where the heterotrophic bacteria rapidly growing.
The bacterias are activated by the flow of air(oxygen) to perform the oxidation of organic materials. Bacterias that are active in the aeration tank is Escherichia coli, Enterobacter,  Sphaerotilus natans, Beggatoa,Achromobacter, Flavobacterium,and Pseudomonas. These bacteria form clumps or flocs. The floating blobs are thenfloated on the surface of waste.
